Hemp is one of the oldest crops on earth and belonged to the most important fibre plants in Europe for a very long time. From the different parts of the plant, such as fibres, seeds, leaves or flowers various valuable products can be made such as fabrics, ropes, paper, many oils, food, cosmetic products, smoking products etc. The millennial-old crop is known for its many different areas of application. For a long time, hemp was frowned upon as an intoxicant, but the plant scores with numerous positive effects on health. The cannabis plant contains over 480 ingredients which are used in medicine. Because of this it is now increasingly being used as a pharmaceutical and for conventional use. Among other thing the cannabidiol (CBD) extracted from the plant has many positive influences on health.
The active ingredients
“Cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids”
Cannabis plants receive different composite effective profiles depending on the strain and type (Indica, Sativa and Ruderalis), an important component are the cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids. The cannabinoids are responsible for the positive effect of the plant. Until now there are more than 113 known different cannabinoids. These are chemical compounds that each have a unique influence on our cannabinoid receptors in our bodies. This was proven for the first time in 1987 (by professor Allyn Howelett of Saint Louis University in Missouri (USA)). Among the most important and well-known cannabinoids are Cannabidiol (CBD), Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and Cannabigerol (CBG).
Cannabidiol can show many positive effects by binding to cannabinoid receptors. (see table)
Cannabigerol is an often-overlooked cannabinoid. While the plant is growing, CBG is converted by enzymes in the plant to other cannabinoids such as CBD. Therefore, CBG usually comes in small amounts.
Tetrahydrocannabinol is the psychoactive substance in the cannabis plant and is prohibited in Switzerland since THC falls under the Narcotics Act. The exception is if the THC content is less than 1%, because at such a low THC content, the plant does not have a psychoactive effect.

The USA is in first place with a market share of 40%. According to statistics the CBD market will continue to grow strongly around the world. In America, an increase of over 350% is predicted until 2022. Canada belongs to the largest hemp-growing countries in the world. In 2017, 55´900 hectares of land were registered for hemp cultivation. To compare, throughout Europe we are growing almost 35´000 hectares.
